Meet Svea - your Partner in Improvement

'Eventually the day comes when the risk to remain tight in a bud,
is more painful than the risk it takes to blossom'

Anais Nin

I'm deeply committed to partnering with capable, forward-thinking woman and men seeking to accomplish value and quality to create meaningful, impactful, and profitable working lives. As Margaret Mead said "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. indeed, it is the only thing that ever has"

If you are looking for a proven, quality conscious professional who can partner with you to be set free from

  • feeling oppressed by your 'To Do' list. Never getting enough of what's important done
  • experiencing doubt and/or conflict about where to devote your time and energy
  • working early mornings and late nights just to be able to keep your head above water

then you're in a good place. With more than 30 years of a variety of working experience, in a variety of contexts, and under some pretty dire circumstances, my mission and commitment are to  supporting you in restoring clarity, co-ordinating purposeful change efforts, and building solutions that are tailored to your circumstances. Improvements that are  sustainable and have respect for time, effort, and cost.

From a very young age I had a keen awareness of the intricacies of life. I was the child who observed, who noticed the paradoxical and counter-intuitive, and who pondered how to optimise and enjoy what was available, rather than complaining about what was lacking. It made complete sense to me that parents belonging to various faiths would send their children to the Catholic Convent I attended in primary school. If you wanted your children to be free from the strictures of racial prejudice that living in South Africa in the 1960s and 70s encouraged, what better way than to provide them with a mixed race, mixed faith, mixed languages experience - everyday.

While I witnessed and worked with people experiencing the deep sorrows and community fracturing that accompanies political struggle, I also noticed the extraordinary creativity, dignity, and compassion that people brought to their own and each others' everyday lives.

Clients say some remarkable things about the impact working with me has on their work and their lives. These are some benefits that await you if you invite me to serve you in creating progress and success for yourself and others.

  • Re-ignite  your capabilities and restore your confidence
  • Free up your energy to accomplish what is important and matters to you, and gets you the appreciation and recognition your deserve
  • Live with purpose and make your contributions to creating a worthwhile world for yourself and others

What lights me up about doing this work is that a small tweak here, and some encouragement there can set in motion change which brings improvements beyond what people thought they could create. When people are encouraged to activate their resourcefulness, as well as shift their focus and their language towards solution-building, rather than problem-solving, the impossible can, and does become possible.

What sets me apart from other service providers is my ability to embrace and juggle complexity, diversity and uncertainty so that constructive creativity emerges. Not the creativity of the fanciful and far-fetched. The creativity that gives rise to bold and yet pragmatic ideas, that can be implemented in ways that are sensitive to people, costs, and time.

Five things about me and my experience that might surprise and hopefully delight you - while also serving our work together well are:

  1. Noticing that management by smell is an essential capability when working in a gold mining extraction operation. A wrinkle of the nose, a pause followed by two quick sniffs, and the manager I was talking with, was out the door sensing trouble.  Another piece of information from the field to add to my awareness of the managing by sound that is done my nursing staff in intensive care, and the managing by taste common in reality televison cooking shows.

  2.  Being told by a senior (male) executive I'd never met before that if he closed his eyes during my presentation on the way forward for the department, 'I would have thought it was a highly experienced man speaking, not a young woman who used to be a teacher'. I took it as the compliment he intended it to be.

  3. I cracked the code of how to unravel the strings of 35 plus aprons when they came out of the washng machine at the adult learning centre, Schumacher College, Devon, UK, that I volunteered at after attending courses by Fritjof Capra. A bit of quantum physics came in useful to undo that tangle!

  4. I was head-hunted and appointed as provincial registrar of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) on the strength of my ability to DO systems thinking in organisations, not just produce a doctoral dissertation on the topic.

  5. I stayed next to the phone for more than an hour after going home time when I was brand new in Sydney, Australia. Why? Well, that morning a conversation with a purchaser for a training programme that was urgently needed, ended with "Speak to you later". Not wanting to be unreliable I waited wondering just how much later "Speak to you later" might mean. Huge laughter from the locals who then introduced me to what is a routinely used alternative for 'Good-bye, we're done for now'.

If you would also like some of the facts about expertise, education, and experience, here is a synopsis.

And I invite you to download my detailed CV / Resume. I'd also be very glad to talk with you about what you are wanting to accomplish and how I might contribute to that.

What a Group Human Resources Manager says:

'The benefits were huge. Svea offered to us a talent programme for our internal talents – 80% of them were promoted in the meantime as a result of Svea’s guidance.

Even today they speak often of their learnings and apply them in daily life.'

Zimisele - Group Human Resources Manager

What a General Manager Says ...

'As I moved into a more senior management role – the world got more complex. Svea helped me to navigate thru this. She helped me to shift my thinking - from thinking about what the problem is, to starting to think about the bigger picture, the broader view and also on how to move things forward.

I did a lot of reflection, a lot of trying out things, finding my space - she guides you into a space where you feel comfortable and find your natural style.

And, the coaching that she has done with my staff – three years later I can still see the benefits.'

Ingrid - General Manager: Supply Chain Operations

What a Professional Coach Says ...

"Working with Svea around ethics in coaching and standards of practice enabled me to grow in my learning personally and professionally. Her knowledge on ethics is really sharp and clear.
She stuck with me, was patient with me, and believed I could breakthrough. That was profound. And her sense of humour. She reminded me  - Don't take yourself too seriously - we're here to learn.
Now I know better how to handle these ethics dilemmas, I am of better service. it makes people trust my service, it makes people trust coaches.'

Trish - Executive and Team Coach
